About the event
Every firm that hires an architecture graduate teaches them what practice actually is, whether it means to or not. The model is not set in school. It is inherited from the firms already running it, in how they price work, how they treat time, and who they lose along the way, and it is being rebuilt while the students in UNM’s accredited program train for it.
Evelyn Lee, FAIA, argues that the timing is an advantage rather than a warning.
Drawing on a career spent largely outside conventional practice, Lee looks at three places the gap is widest and firm
leaders have the most room to act: what the profession charges and what the work is worth, how AI is changing
entry-level work and the way firms train people, and the distance between what a graduate arrives knowing and what
a firm now has to close. The talk closes on a single idea: the people entering now have the least to unlearn, and the
firms they walk into decide what they get to build.
